Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday publicly announced that he has shifted his official email service from Gmail to Zoho Mail, urging correspondents to use his new address going forward.

In a post on X, he stated:
“Hello everyone, I have switched to Zoho Mail. Kindly note the change in my email address. My new email address is amitshah.bjp@zohomail.in. For future correspondence via mail, kindly use this address. Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.”

This move is seen as a symbolic endorsement of India’s domestic technology platforms and signals increasing interest in homegrown email services. In recent days, Zoho’s messaging app Arattai has also gained traction, partly fueled by such endorsements.

Zoho Mail

Zoho Mail positions itself as a privacy-focused, ad-free email solution. According to its official documentation, the service does not show ads or use user data for targeted advertising. Zoho states that it “never reads your emails” and that internal access is tightly controlled and monitored. It also offers tools for business and professional users, including encryption, custom domain support, and migration from other providers.

Broader Context & Reactions

Shah’s switch aligns with a broader “Swadeshi tech” narrative that the Indian government and certain officials have been promoting—encouraging preference for domestic software over foreign alternatives. Other ministers, such as IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, have recently declared their own transitions to Zoho’s office-suite tools. In some government directives, officials were asked to use Zoho’s productivity tools for official work to reduce dependency on global providers.

On social media, supporters described Shah’s move as a boost to India’s tech sovereignty, while some experts regarded it as largely symbolic unless adoption scales across institutions.
