WhatsApp is set to roll out a significant update usernames in 2026. This feature aims to enhance user experience and business interactions on the platform. Usernames will be optional for both individual users and businesses. For individuals, adopting a username means it will be displayed instead of their phone number within the app. However, business usernames will not hide the business’s phone number. To facilitate this transition, a new backend user identifier, the business-scoped user ID (BSUID), will be introduced. The BSUID will uniquely identify a WhatsApp user and link them to a specific business.
Individual users can create a unique username to replace their phone number display. Each user is limited to one username at a time but can periodically change it. This change does not affect their phone number, BSUID, or ability to communicate on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Usernames will populate the username in incoming messages
WhatsApp has set a firm deadline for all businesses using its API to update their systems to support usernames and BSUIDs by mid 2026. This includes updating CRM integrations, message routing, and automated support systems to adapt to the new identifiers and ensure continued seamless communication.
Businesses can also adopt usernames. However, this will not hide their phone number. Businesses can claim a reserved username via WhatsApp Manager, Meta Business Suite, or API. If a reserved username is linked to a Facebook Page or Instagram account, these must be linked to the business phone number.
