Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI have officially launched a pilot for Agentic Payments in India, bringing AI-driven commerce and payments directly inside the ChatGPT conversational interface. This initiative, announced on Thursday, marks a significant step towards integrating artificial intelligence with India’s highly popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system, promising a new standard for seamless, user-friendly online transactions
The Agentic Payments feature enables users to search, shop, and pay for products without having to exit the ChatGPT environment. For example, a customer can ask ChatGPT to “order ingredients for a Thai curry from BigBasket,” and the AI agent will automatically search the BigBasket catalogue, present available product options, and complete the transaction after getting the user’s confirmation. The payment process is handled securely via Razorpay’s stack, with Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank providing the banking infrastructure.
Built on the new UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay frameworks, the system ensures that payments are not only rapid but also user-controlled. Users have access to real-time order tracking and can revoke payments instantly if needed. Tata Group’s BigBasket is the first merchant onboarded for the pilot, setting a precedent for broader expansion into more e-commerce and service verticals.
he aim, as outlined by Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI, is to eventually enable AI agents to operate with user-authorized payment credentials, translating intent-driven prompts into completed transactions across diverse sectors.
