Major technology companies have announced sweeping layoffs throughout 2025, with over 180,000 workers losing their jobs across 413 companies as artificial intelligence reshapes the industry landscape. The wave of job cuts has intensified in recent months, with leading firms citing AI adoption and structural reforms as primary drivers.
Wipro and Indian IT Giants Lead Mass Layoffs
Wipro has eliminated 24,516 positions, representing a 9.5% decline in its workforce as the company focuses on “cost efficiency and productivity”. The Indian IT services giant has not officially announced the cuts, but reports indicate the reductions occurred throughout fiscal year 2024 and continuing into 2025.
Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest IT company, confirmed plans to cut approximately 12,000 employees—about 2% of its global workforce—as part of organizational restructuring. The company reported a Rs 1,135 crore restructuring expense in its September quarter, with CEO K Krithivasan stating the cuts target mid- and senior-level roles. However, employee unions claim the actual number of exits could be significantly higher, alleging “coercion and pressure tactics” to force resignations.
Global Tech Giants Accelerate Job Cuts
Intel leads global layoffs with plans to eliminate over 25,000 positions by year-end 2025, reducing its workforce from 108,900 to approximately 75,000 employees. The semiconductor giant has already cut around 15,000 jobs since April, with CEO Lip-Bu Tan warning employees that “there are no more blank checks”.
Microsoft has laid off over 15,000 employees across multiple rounds, including 9,000 positions in July alone. CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged the cuts have been “weighing heavily” on him but described them as necessary for the company’s AI transformation, noting that AI now writes 20-30% of Microsoft’s code.
Accenture has eliminated more than 11,000 jobs over three months as part of an $865 million restructuring program. CEO Julie Sweet stated the company is “exiting people on a compressed timeline where reskilling is not a viable path for the skills we need”. The consulting giant’s workforce dropped from 791,000 to 779,000 employees between May and August 2025.
AI-Driven Transformation Reshapes Industry
The layoffs reflect a fundamental shift as companies prioritize AI capabilities over traditional roles. Meta has cut approximately 3,600 employees this year, while Google eliminated over 100 positions in its design department to focus on AI projects
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed the company will gradually reduce its corporate workforce as generative AI tools reshape operations, with customer service and software development roles facing the biggest impact. The e-commerce giant has already laid off hundreds from AWS and expects to reduce 10% of its staff.
Industry analysts note that the pace of 489 job cuts per day in 2025 surpasses early-year estimates and continues the trend from 2024’s 152,000 tech layoffs. As companies invest billions in AI infrastructure while eliminating traditional roles, the human cost of technological transformation becomes increasingly evident across the global technology sector.
