The return of Chinese engineers from an Apple supplier has stirred concerns about potential impacts on the production of the forthcoming iPhone 17. However, insiders assure that these changes will not disrupt Apple’s manufacturing timeline in India. Sources confirm that Apple is maintaining its plan to enhance production capabilities in the country, with vendors like Foxconn and Tata Electronics experiencing improved access to necessary capital goods from China, which are essential for iPhone production.
“The departure of Chinese professionals from Foxconn hasn’t affected iPhone assembly. We remain on schedule for iPhone 17 production in India,” stated an informed source. Although Apple, Foxconn, and Tata Electronics have not officially commented, multiple sources indicate that scores of Chinese engineers have returned home in recent months. These professionals were instrumental in managing assembly operations, designing factories, and training local talent in handling advanced production tools. Additionally, reports highlight a smoother supply chain for capital goods from China, reinforcing the stable production environment in India. Plans to boost iPhone production from approximately 35-40 million units in 2024-25 to 60 million units this year are underway.
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently revealed that all iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter will originate from India. The assembly of these devices takes place at Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu facility, while Tata Electronics, managing Pegatron Corp’s operations, continues to play a crucial role. The two manufacturers are expanding their operations to meet Apple’s growing production targets. Notably, Apple’s iPhone exports from India saw a 60% increase, reaching an estimated value of USD 22 billion for the year ending March 31, 2025. According to S&P Global, Apple’s US iPhone sales reached 75.9 million units in 2024, with exports from India at 3.1 million units by March, signaling a need for increased shipments. The report also notes a significant rise in exports to the US, driven by potential tariff hikes.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that iPhones worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore were exported in fiscal 2025. Apple’s presence in India has significantly impacted job creation, employing around 200,000 individuals across various vendors. As India’s smartphone exports continue to surge, the country solidifies its status as a major mobile manufacturing hub.
