Jeff Bezos has returned to an operational leadership role as co-CEO of a new artificial intelligence startup, Project Prometheus, which has raised $6.2 billion in funding. Co-founded with physicist and former Google X researcher Vik Bajaj, the stealth-mode company aims to develop AI technologies that understand and interact with the physical world, focusing on sectors such as computing, aerospace, automobiles, and manufacturing.

Unlike popular AI models centered on text and digital data, Project Prometheus intends to build AI systems capable of reasoning about complex physical environments to boost engineering and manufacturing capabilities. This approach aligns with Bezos’s longstanding interest in hardware innovation and space exploration, complementing his other ventures like Blue Origin.

With about 100 employees, including top talent from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta, Project Prometheus is positioning itself as one of the most well-financed early-stage AI startups globally. The startup’s mission involves applying AI to transform fields that have yet to see significant AI impact, such as robotics, logistics, and space infrastructure.

Though still in stealth, Project Prometheus signals Bezos’s strategic bet on AI’s potential to reshape both industry and society by merging cutting-edge technology with the realities of the physical economy. This move underscores his belief in AI’s long-term benefits despite current market uncertainties and marks a notable reentry into hands-on tech leadership since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021.

This venture combines Bezos’s ambition for technological advancement with his vision of future human expansion into space and the practical applications of intelligent systems on Earth.
