Curriculum on AI to be introduced in all schools from Class 3 onwards

Education in Artificial Intelligence must be treated as a basic universal skill linked to The World Around Us – Secretary, School Education

India’s Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSE&L), under the Ministry of Education, is reinforcing its commitment to Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) as vital skills for the future. By supporting organizations like CBSE, NCERT, KVS, and NVS, along with States and Union Territories, the department aims to create an inclusive curriculum within the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded educational experience.

AI & CT will enhance learning, critical thinking, and teaching methodologies while promoting the concept of “AI for Public Good.” Starting in Grade 3, this initiative organically introduces ethical AI applications to address complex problems, marking a significant step forward.

On October 29th, 2025, a stakeholder consultation brought together CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and other experts. An expert committee, led by Prof. Karthik Raman from IIT Madras, has been formed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to develop the AI & CT curriculum.

During the consultation, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, DoSeL, emphasized that AI education should be a fundamental skill linked to The World Around Us (TWAU). He stressed the importance of a broad, inclusive curriculum aligned with NCF SE 2023, prioritizing each child’s unique potential. Policymakers aim to set a minimum standard and continuously adapt to evolving needs.

Kumar further noted that teacher training and learning materials, including NISHTHA modules and video resources, are essential for curriculum implementation. NCERT and CBSE will collaborate through a Coordination Committee under NCF SE to ensure seamless integration and quality assurance. He also mentioned that cross-national and cross-international Boards analysis and an international perspective are valuable but must be tailored to our specific needs.

Prachi Pandey, Joint Secretary (I&T), concluded by highlighting the importance of meeting the established deadlines for curriculum development and rollout.

Key Initiatives Include:

  • Introduction of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking from Grade 3 onwards, starting in the academic session 2026–27, aligned with NEP 2020 and NCF SE 2023.
  • Integration of AI & CT curriculum, time allocation, and resources under NCF SE.
  • Development of resource materials, handbooks, and digital resources by December 2025.
  • Teacher training through NISHTHA and other institutions, designed to be grade-specific and time-bound.
