US President Donald Trump announced on July 30 that a 25% tariff on goods imported from India will take effect August 1, 2025, accompanied by an unspecified “penalty” targeting India’s continued purchases of Russian military equipment and energy. Trump criticized India’s longstanding protectionist policies and a “massive trade deficit” with the US, alleging New Delhi has done “relatively little business” with American exporters compared to other markets. India’s government responded that it is studying the implications while reaffirming its commitment to a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial agreement.
