Zomato’s Chief of Staff Hiring Saga: From Backlash to Breakthrough

Zomato’s recent Chief of Staff hiring process has been a rollercoaster. It started with a bold idea charging candidates to be considered for the role. This sparked huge backlash on social media, with many questioning the fairness of a paid hiring process. In response, Zomato quickly reversed course, scrapping the fee and ensuring that no need to pay to work with them.

Now, CEO Deepinder Goyal has shared an update on the hiring process. Out of 18,000+ applications, Zomato met over 150 exceptional candidates, extended offers to 30 top-tier individuals, and welcomed 18 hires into key roles across Zomato, Blinkit, and other group companies. These hires include founders, engineers, and operators who have demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills and a long-term mindset.

What stands out? Zomato’s focus on compounding impact seeking individuals who optimize for long-term growth rather than short-term wins. Four hires are already working directly with Goyal, and two have stepped into Chief of Staff roles.

Despite the initial controversy, Zomato has turned things around, proving that the right talent can be found and rewarded fairly. This isn’t just a hiring sprint, it’s a strategic investment in leadership. With thousands of applications still in review, this story is far from over.
