The European Union has announced a new set of sanctions that include three India-based companies, marking the first time multiple Indian firms have been targeted under EU restrictions related to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Details of the EU Sanctions
On October 23, 2025, the EU adopted its 19th package of sanctions against Russia. This package targets 45 entities globally, accused of supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex by helping bypass export restrictions on sensitive technologies such as CNC machine tools, microelectronics, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Among these 45 entities, 17 are outside Russia 12 from China (including Hong Kong), three from India, and two from Thailand
These companies are accused of enabling the circumvention of EU export restrictions and facilitating supplies of dual‑use goods to Russian defense entities.
Impact and Reactions
The sanctioned Indian firms will face tighter export controls and restrictions on access to military-use technologies, cutting them off from European trade in sensitive goods. As of now, the Indian government has not issued an official response to the measures.
Diplomatic analysts suggest the EU’s move is largely symbolic but could complicate upcoming trade negotiations between India and the EU, especially amid the United States’ new tariff actions against Indian imports linked to Russian oil purchases.
