Indian travelers visiting Malaysia will soon be able to make payments via UPI apps, as Razorpay Curlec partners with NPCI International. This move positions Malaysia as one of the first international markets to officially accept India’s popular Unified Payments Interface for in-store and online purchases. Settlement of payments will be processed instantly, with Malaysian merchants receiving funds in Malaysian Ringgit(MYR), eliminating the hassle of currency conversion for both visitors and businesses.
The development comes at a time when Indian arrivals to Malaysia have grown significantly. In 2024, the country welcomed over one million Indian tourists who spent upwards of Rs 110 billion underscoring the demand for an interoperable, cashless solution tailored to their needs. Razorpay Curlec, which already holds regulatory approval from Bank Negara Malaysia and membership in PayNet, is rolling out UPI acceptance to over 5,000 merchants initially, leveraging its technological expertise as part of one of India’s leading payment gateways.
With the launch, Indian visitors will be able to use any UPI-enabled app at both physical retail outlets and e-commerce platforms in Malaysia. The pilot, announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, “strengthens cross-border payments and supports Malaysia’s agenda for a digital-first economy,” explained Razorpay’s management in an official statement. The platform is expected to facilitate billions of ringgit worth of transactions in its first year, supporting a wide spectrum of sectors from retail to hospitality.
