Karnataka has launched KEO(Knowledge-driven, Economical and Open-source), a groundbreaking, affordable personal computer designed and developed locally to address the digital divide across India and especially in Karnataka. The state-developed device, set for formal unveiling by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, integrates an open-source RISC-V processor and a Linux-based operating system, offering a full computing experience at budget-friendly pricing.
With only about 10 percent of Indians owning computers and just 15 percent in Karnataka, KEO aims to democratize access to digital education and work opportunities. Over 60 percent of Indian students have been unable to participate in online learning due to device scarcity. By providing connectivity options such as 4G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and audio support, KEO ensures usability for diverse user needs.
What sets KEO apart is its on-device AI core, which enables artificial intelligence applications to run locally without reliance on internet access. It comes preloaded with BUDDH, an AI agent trained on Karnataka’s DSERT syllabus, helping students in low-connectivity regions engage with digital educational content. The state plans to deploy this device across schools, universities, government offices, small businesses, and homes, fostering inclusive digital learning, skilling, and entrepreneurship.
KEONICS Chairman Sharath Kumar Bache Gowda highlighted that by embracing an open-source RISC-V stack, Karnataka is reinforcing its commitment to accessible, home-grown computing solutions. IT Minister Priyank Kharge emphasized that KEO is an “inclusion device” aimed at expanding affordable mass computing, enabling a broader population to participate in India’s digital economy.
