Meta introduced its next-gen AI research glasses “Aria Gen 2”

Meta is stepping up its game with a new version of its research glasses “Aria Gen 2”, designed to push the boundaries of AI, robotics, and how machines see the world. This updated model builds on earlier work from 2020 and boasts improved sensors, AI processing right on the device, and a design that’s easier to use.

These glasses are packed with tech, including cameras that see in color and map spaces, eye-tracking, microphones that capture sound from all directions, motion sensors, GPS, and even sensors in the nosepads that monitor heart rate and improve voice recognition. Meta’s own chip handles tasks like mapping surroundings, tracking eyes and hands, and understanding speech, all without sending data to the cloud. Weighing in at just 75 grams, the glasses have a battery life of six to eight hours and fold up for easy carrying. Open-ear speakers use clever technology to cancel out unwanted noise and provide real-time AI feedback, making for interactive experiences.

Meta’s Reality Labs Research and FAIR AI lab will be using these glasses for AI research. They will also be available to researchers in universities and businesses. Meta is also planning to launch a standalone app for its AI assistant, to compete with chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. This app, called Meta AI, could be released between April and June. Currently, Meta AI is only available through Facebook, WhatsApp, and a website.

Meta is also considering a paid subscription for Meta AI, which would offer extra features. Prices haven’t been announced yet.

Meta will be hosting its first AI developer conference, LlamaCon, in late April.
