Perplexity has begun rolling out its “Personal Computer,” an AI-powered system designed to transform Mac devices into continuously running assistants capable of managing files, applications, and web tasks.
The feature, first unveiled on March 11 at the company’s Ask developer conference in San Francisco, is now available to Perplexity Max subscribers and users who joined the initial waitlist. CEO Aravind Srinivas positioned the product as a shift from traditional computing, emphasizing goal-driven interactions over command-based systems.
Personal Computer integrates with the Perplexity Mac app, enabling it to securely orchestrate tasks across local files, native macOS applications, and browsers. It can read and write files, interact with services such as iMessage, Mail, and Calendar, and execute tasks continuously in the background. Users can also trigger actions remotely from an iPhone, with two-factor authentication required for access.
The system relies on a network of roughly 20 AI models, dynamically selecting the most suitable one for each task. Safeguards include mandatory user confirmations, an audit trail, and a kill switch for immediate shutdown.
Access to Personal Computer is limited to Perplexity’s $200-per-month Max subscription tier. The lower-priced Pro plan, at $20 per month, does not include the feature but supports the company’s cloud-based “Perplexity Computer,” introduced earlier this year. Enterprise offerings are expected at a later stage.
The launch positions Perplexity alongside other companies developing agent-based AI systems, signaling growing competition in software designed to automate complex workflows across personal computing environments.
