Google has reached a milestone where 75% of its new code is now generated by artificial intelligence, with human engineers reviewing and approving the output. CEO Sundar Pichai made the disclosure during his keynote at Google Cloud Next 2026 in Las Vegas, highlighting the company’s transition into an “agentic Gemini era”.
The pace of adoption has been swift. Pichai noted the figure tripled from 25% reported in late 2024, passing 50% by late 2025, before hitting 75% recently. An internal code migration, for instance, finished six times faster than a year prior thanks to agentic AI workflows.
Pichai stressed this boosts productivity without replacing engineers. Google intends to keep hiring while using AI to amplify what teams achieve, as seen in rapid prototyping like the Gemini macOS app built in days via the Antigravity platform.
The trend extends industry-wide. Meta targets over 75% AI-generated code for some teams by mid-2026. A recent survey pegs 42% of committed code across developers as AI-generated, forecasting 65% by 2027.
