Perplexity has introduced Perplexity Computer, a general-purpose digital worker designed to unify multiple frontier AI models into a single system capable of running complex workflows over extended periods. Positioned as an evolution beyond traditional chat interfaces and single-task agents, the system is built to operate software much like a human coworker, creating, coordinating, and executing tasks that can span hours or even months.
Users begin by describing an outcome, after which Perplexity Computer decomposes the goal into tasks and subtasks and spins up specialized sub-agents to handle work such as web research, document generation, data processing, and API calls. These agents run asynchronously in isolated compute environments with access to a filesystem, browser, and integrated tools, allowing multiple workflows to run in parallel while the user focuses on other activities. When the system encounters obstacles, it can create additional sub-agents to locate API keys, gather supplemental information, write code, or escalate to the user only when necessary.
Perplexity frames Computer as a natural extension of its mission to provide highly accurate AI for users whose questions often require both information and action. The company notes that its products, including the Comet AI-native browser, Comet Assistant, deep research capabilities, and persistent memory, have been built on a model-agnostic foundation that emphasizes user choice and control.
The new system relies on intelligent multi-model orchestration rather than a single model backbone. As of launch, Perplexity Computer uses Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine and coordinates other specialized models, including Gemini for deep research, Nano Banana for images, Veo 3.1 for video, Grok for fast lightweight tasks, and ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall and broad search. The company says this architecture can evolve as models advance and also allows users to select specific models for particular subtasks as token budgets and role requirements change.
Invoking the historical use of the term “computer” for human calculators, Perplexity describes the product as a system for autonomous division of complex work with accuracy at its core. Perplexity Computer is available to Perplexity Max subscribers and is set to roll out to Enterprise Max users in the near future.
