Recent reports have created confusion about whether OpenAI’s ChatGPT is banned from giving legal or medical advice. OpenAI has clearly denied these claims, stating that no such ban or policy change has been made. According to OpenAI’s Health AI lead Karan Singhal X post, ChatGPT’s behavior remains consistent with its long-standing guidelines. The AI has never been a substitute for professional legal or medical counsel, but it continues to be an excellent tool to help users understand information related to these fields.

The confusion arose after an update to OpenAI’s usage policies on October 29, 2025, which reiterated that ChatGPT and OpenAI products cannot provide licensed, personalized advice without the involvement of a qualified professional. This has always been the case, emphasizing user safety and the limitations of AI-generated advice. The latest policy clarifies that ChatGPT can explain principles and general information but cannot replace expert advice, especially for specific legal or medical decisions.
