The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar app aimed at providing 140 crore Indian residents a secure, digital way to carry and manage their Aadhaar identity cards on smartphones. Available on both Android and iOS, this app eliminates the need for physical Aadhaar copies by allowing users to store, share, and verify their Aadhaar digitally. With advanced features such as face authentication and biometric locks, the app ensures that only registered users can access their details, significantly enhancing security.
The app supports selective data sharing, enabling users to reveal only essential information like name and photo while keeping sensitive data such as address or date of birth private. Furthermore, biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photographs can be locked to prevent unauthorized access, and users can track authentication history to monitor where their Aadhaar has been used.
An important convenience feature is the ability to manage Aadhaar records of up to five family members within a single app, provided the profiles share the same registered mobile number. The setup process involves downloading the app, verifying the Aadhaar-linked mobile number through OTP, performing face authentication, and setting a security PIN. This launch coincides with broader UIDAI initiatives, including the upcoming e-Aadhaar app, expected by December 2025, which will allow users to update their demographic details remotely through AI and Face ID verification.
