Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 28 Saturday, inaugurated Micron Technology’s Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a major milestone in India’s effort to establish a foothold in the global semiconductor industry. The launch signifies the start of commercial production of India’s first domestically assembled semiconductor memory modules.
The facility, developed with an investment exceeding Rs 22,500 crore (around $2.75 billion), is the first major project approved under the India Semiconductor Mission. Construction began following an agreement between the Gujarat government and Micron in June 2023, with the groundbreaking taking place in September the same year. The plant will assemble and test DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers sourced from Micron’s global operations for distribution across international markets.
Spanning about 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, the Sanand site ranks among the largest of its kind globally. According to Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the cleanroom’s construction required three and a half times more steel than the Eiffel Tower and concrete equivalent to that of 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Currently, the facility employs roughly 2,000 people, with the workforce expected to rise to 5,000 direct jobs as production scales up and around 15,000 additional indirect employment opportunities. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the inauguration alongside the Prime Minister.
The plant will produce crucial components including solid-state drives and memory products used across computing, smartphones, servers, and data centers—sectors increasingly driven by artificial intelligence and high-performance computing demand.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the project underscores India’s growing position as a trusted and competitive hub for semiconductor manufacturing. Mehrotra noted that Micron is ready to ramp up volume production, underscoring India’s entry into global chipmaking through large-scale advanced memory assembly.
