SpaceXAI and AI coding startup Cursor are expected to launch their first jointly developed artificial intelligence model as early as Wednesday, The Information reported. The launch would mark the first major product from the companies’ partnership following SpaceXAI’s planned acquisition of Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere.
The new AI model was originally scheduled to launch earlier this week but was reportedly delayed to improve its efficiency.
The partnership between SpaceXAI and Cursor was first announced in April, when SpaceX said in a post on X, “SpaceXAI and Cursor are now collaborating closely to develop the world’s premier coding and knowledge work AI.” At the time, SpaceX secured an option to either acquire Anysphere for $60 billion or invest $10 billion in a joint development partnership.
In June, shortly after its record-setting Nasdaq IPO, SpaceX exercised the acquisition option and signed a $60 billion all-stock acquisition deal, which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. In a securities filing, the company said, “for the past few months, SpaceXAI has been jointly training a model with Cursor, which will be released in Cursor and Grok Build soon.”
The model has been developed using xAI’s infrastructure, including its Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, along with Cursor’s coding data. It is reportedly based on xAI’s 1.5-trillion-parameter architecture and has been in private beta since late June.
The model is expected to process information quickly, making it competitive in some areas with Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.5. Its launch is also expected to strengthen SpaceXAI’s position in the AI coding market, where it competes with companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI.
The expected release comes just days after xAI completed its rebranding to SpaceXAI. It remains unclear whether Wednesday’s launch will also include the Grok Build coding agent alongside Cursor integration, although the companies have previously indicated that both products are expected to launch together.
