Google has launched a new fake call detection feature on Android devices to protect users from deepfake-enabled impersonation scams. The capability rolls out globally starting Tuesday to phones running Android 12 and later, with Pixel devices receiving it first and non-Pixel Android handsets expected to get support in the coming months .
The system works through Rich Communication Services encrypted messaging infrastructure. When a call arrives from a known contact, the recipient’s phone silently communicates with the caller’s device over an end-to-end encrypted RCS link to verify identity. If no confirmation signal is received, the recipient’s device pings the contact’s phone to check whether a call is actually being made. When the contact’s device reports it is not making a call, the recipient sees an on-screen warning advising them to hang up immediately .
Unlike carrier-based authentication systems such as STIR/SHAKEN that require network-level support, Google’s approach operates person-to-person. The feature requires both parties to use the Phone by Google app along with Google Messages and Contacts. It is enabled by default, addressing a limitation of earlier opt-in scam detection tools that critics said were unlikely to be activated by vulnerable users .
The launch responds to escalating global losses from impersonation fraud. An INTERPOL report published in March 2026 warned of increasingly sophisticated global financial fraud, noting that AI-enhanced fraud is 4.5 times more profitable than traditional methods . A separate analysis cited global fraud losses approaching $500 billion annually, with INTERPOL notices and diffusions related to fraud increasing by 54 percent between 2024 and 2025 .
Google’s June feature bundle includes additional updates beyond fake call detection. The company expanded QuickShare AirDrop compatibility, added Personal Safety app access for children under 13, and introduced new Circle to Search capabilities for identifying full outfits in images .
The fake call detection feature represents a significant shift in how Android handles voice call verification. By operating at the device level rather than relying on carrier infrastructure, Google enables broader adoption without requiring telecommunications network upgrades. The default-on configuration aims to ensure protection reaches users who might not actively enable security features themselves.
As AI impersonation technology becomes more accessible, security measures like Google’s digital handshake system address a growing vulnerability in everyday communication. The person-to-person verification model offers a practical solution that works within existing smartphone ecosystems while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
