Reliance Industries Limited and Meta Platforms have announced a partnership to develop an AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant expansion of the social media giant’s infrastructure presence in India.
Under the agreement, Reliance will build a data center with 168 MW capacity that Meta will lease, with options to scale the facility further. The project is scheduled to be delivered within two years from the announcement date.
“This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation not just for India, but for the world.” – Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited
The Jamnagar facility will be Meta’s first built-to-suit data center in India and is designed to support the company’s global AI infrastructure needs. This investment reflects Meta’s commitment to expanding computing capacity amid intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence.
“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.” – Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO, Meta
Reliance Industries shares rallied approximately 2 percent following the announcement as investors reacted to the partnership deal. The data center will be powered by renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling, aligning with sustainability standards for large-scale data infrastructure.
As part of the agreement, Reliance will provide end-to-end services including design, construction, utilities, renewable power, network connectivity, and managed operations for the facility.
The partnership represents a significant expansion of Meta’s existing strategic relationship with Reliance Industries. The two companies previously formed a joint venture with an investment of 855 crore rupees, in which Reliance holds 70 percent and Meta holds 30 percent.
This data center project enhances India’s technology infrastructure and positions the country as a growing hub for AI computing capacity. The facility will power Meta’s products and AI capabilities needed to serve one of its largest and fastest-growing user communities globally.
The announcement comes as global technology companies increasingly invest in data center infrastructure to support artificial intelligence applications and machine learning operations. Computing capacity has become a critical resource as AI models require extensive processing power.
Jamnagar, located in the western Indian state of Gujarat, has emerged as a location for major industrial and technology investments. The site offers strategic advantages for data center operations including access to renewable energy sources and established industrial infrastructure.
