Alibaba has launched Happy Oyster, a new artificial intelligence model designed to generate interactive 3D environments, marking a significant step beyond conventional video-generation tools and intensifying competition with Tencent in the emerging “world model” space.
Developed by Alibaba’s recently formed Alibaba Token Hub (ATH), the model can create dynamic 3D scenes with physics-based realism that respond in real time to user input. The technology is positioned for applications across film production, television, and game development, where immersive and interactive content is becoming increasingly valuable.
Happy Oyster introduces two operating modes. Its “Directing” mode allows users to actively shape virtual environments by adjusting elements such as lighting and narrative progression in real time. In contrast, the “Wandering” mode places users in first-person, continuously expanding environments generated from a single prompt. The model is currently available through an early access program.
The release underscores the rapid emergence of ATH, which Alibaba established on March 16 under CEO Eddie Wu. The unit объединяет several internal AI teams, including Tongyi Lab and the Qwen model group, to accelerate development and commercialization of AI products. Happy Oyster builds on this momentum, following the recent confirmation that ATH also developed the high-performing HappyHorse video model.
Alibaba’s move comes as Tencent prepares to roll out HY-World 2.0, an open-source multimodal system capable of generating navigable 3D environments compatible with major game engines. Tencent has already established an early presence in this space with earlier iterations of its Hunyuan 3D tools.
