Slack, the popular workplace communication tool, experienced a significant outage affecting users worldwide. The problems spanned multiple features, including logging in, sending messages, connecting to the service, sharing files, using API integrations, and running workflows.
The company’s technical dashboard first identified the issue around 8:57 PM, noting problems with connection and loading. Data from DownDetector, a site that monitors online service disruptions, showed that about 3,100 users reported issues with Slack around 10 PM, the peak of the outage. By 11:12 PM, the number of reports had decreased to roughly 1,400.
Slack stated on its dashboard that they were investigating reports of connection or loading difficulties and would provide further updates as they became available. In their latest update, Slack mentioned that their investigation was still ongoing concerning deprecated functionality for Slack features such as workflows, threads, sending messages and API-related features. They promised to share more information as soon as possible.
The company has not yet provided an estimated time for when all services will be fully restored. This Salesforce-owned platform also had connectivity issues last month. Other major tech companies, including OpenAI and Meta, have also experienced outages recently. In January, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot faced a major outage that lasted about three hours. Prior to that, Meta’s WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram went down for many users in India in December of the previous year. Meta has faced multiple outages in India over the past year.
