OpenAI is reportedly developing a unified desktop “superapp” that will integrate its ChatGPT assistant, Codex coding platform, and web browser into a single application. The move, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, aims to simplify how users interact with OpenAI’s range of products by bringing them under one interface.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications and former chief executive of Instacart, is leading the initiative. She will oversee the consolidation process and coordinate with the company’s sales division to position the new app for enterprise adoption. OpenAI President Greg Brockman, who oversees computing and infrastructure projects, is expected to work closely with Simo on the rollout and organizational restructuring associated with the shift.
The superapp concept builds on OpenAI’s recent expansion across both consumer and developer-focused tools. Codex, first introduced in May 2025 as a cloud-based coding assistant using the o3 model, was later released as a standalone macOS app in February 2026 and a Windows version in March 2026. The company’s browser project, which gained traction after Simo joined in August 2025, is also believed to be part of the integration effort.
According to the Journal, the new desktop platform represents a step toward a more streamlined user experience, enabling seamless switching between text-based dialogue, coding tasks, and live information retrieval. OpenAI declined to comment on the report, and Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the details.
The initiative aligns with a broader global trend toward multifunctional “superapps,” a model popularized by companies such as WeChat and Grab. By consolidating its key services, OpenAI is positioning itself to offer a more cohesive product suite for professionals and businesses navigating the expanding landscape of generative AI tools.
