India’s e-commerce and quick commerce sectors are witnessing a major talent upswing, with overall hiring rising 35% in two years, from around 73,320 roles in 2023 to nearly 98,750 in 2025, according to data from CIEL HR. The trend marks a shift toward capability-led hiring as companies prioritize digital skills and artificial intelligence expertise to sustain growth.
Technology and engineering functions have driven much of the expansion, with demand for software development engineers, DevOps professionals, solution architects, and AI and machine learning specialists more than tripling over the same period. These roles are central to building recommendation systems, chatbots, warehouse automation, and ensuring platform resilience.
AI expertise is commanding a strong pay premium. Specialists in machine learning earn 30% to 40% more than traditional tech roles, while professionals working on generative AI and large language models see premiums of 15% to 20%. Experienced NLP and computer vision engineers with about five years of experience are reaching compensation levels of up to ₹50 lakh annually.
Growth is not confined to technology roles. Supply chain and fulfillment functions have expanded 25%, reflecting the rapid penetration of quick commerce into smaller cities. Positions such as warehouse managers, fulfillment planners, and city operations leads are increasingly in demand.
Parallel to this trend, a TeamLease Services Employment Outlook Report projects India’s overall workforce will grow by 4.7% in the first half of FY27. E-commerce and technology startups are expected to lead job creation with an 8.9% net employment change. Analysts say the hiring momentum reflects a structural shift rather than a cyclical rebound, with Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune remaining top markets while Tier 2 cities gain traction.
Industry leaders note that sustainable growth now depends on integrating specialized technology capabilities with agile operational execution, as companies adapt to an economy increasingly defined by AI and digital infrastructure.
