Apple is preparing to open Siri to third-party artificial intelligence chatbots, a major shift that will end its exclusive integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and turn its digital assistant into a broader AI platform. Bloomberg reported that the feature will debut with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, allowing users to access rival AI services such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude through Siri.
The new framework will let users choose their preferred chatbot directly within Siri. Those who have compatible apps installed will be able to route queries to those services from the assistant. Apple plans to introduce a new “Extensions” option in the Siri and Apple Intelligence settings where users can link or download supported chatbot apps from the App Store.
AI developers will need to build support into their apps to function with Siri integration. Apple is also expected to benefit financially, as third-party AI services offered through the App Store could generate subscription revenue.
The initiative is part of a broader Siri overhaul, internally known as Campo, which the company plans to unveil at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. Apple is testing a dedicated Siri app with a conversational interface for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, alongside a new “Ask Siri” option to send highlighted text from any app into a chat window.
While Apple’s own Siri chatbot will continue to rely on Google’s Gemini models under a billion-dollar partnership announced earlier this year, the new system will give users the flexibility to choose alternative chatbots. The move comes as Apple faces mounting competitive pressure from Google, Samsung, and startups such as xAI, whose founder Elon Musk has criticized Apple’s exclusive OpenAI deal and sought to bring his Grok chatbot to iPhones.
Reuters said Apple has declined to comment on the reported plans.
