Alibaba has unveiled its latest AI chip, the Zhenwu M890, through its semiconductor design unit T-Head as the Chinese company steps up efforts to build domestic alternatives to Nvidia processors. Reuters reported that the chip is aimed at supporting the next generation of AI agents, which can carry out multi-step tasks with limited human oversight.
Alibaba said the Zhenwu M890 delivers three times the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu 810E. CNBC reported that the chip includes 144 GB of GPU memory and 800 GB per second of interchip bandwidth, while Reuters said it is designed to handle the memory and communication demands of agent workloads.
The company also outlined a multi-year chip roadmap that includes the V900 in the third quarter of 2027 and the J900 in the third quarter of 2028, according to Reuters. Alibaba said the V900 is expected to deliver roughly another threefold performance gain over the M890.
Alibaba unveiled the chip at its annual cloud summit alongside the Panjiu AL128 server system, which packs 128 accelerators into a single rack, Business Standard reported. The company also said it has already delivered 560,000 Zhenwu units to more than 400 customers across 20 industries.
