Google is testing a new Google Maps capability that would let its Gemini AI assistant place food orders on behalf of users, according to code discovered in a recent Android app build. The feature has not been officially announced and is not yet available to the public.
An APK teardown of Google Maps for Android version 26.27.00.941319029 surfaced promotional text for a feature labelled “Ask Maps to order food.” One of the strings describes the experience as letting users say what they are craving, discover local favorites, and then have Maps “order for you — even while you’re on the go,” alongside prompts such as “Try it out” and “Maybe later.” The language points to a hands-free, voice-led workflow aimed at people already behind the wheel.
The code suggests the feature will build on Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational layer inside Google Maps that launched earlier this year to provide personalized restaurant and place recommendations in the United States and India. Ask Maps already allows users to ask complex questions about where to go and what to eat; the new strings indicate an expansion from discovery and navigation into completing transactions.
Google has previously enabled similar “agentic” behavior through Gemini’s screen automation on select devices, such as recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, where the assistant can already help order takeout or book rides in third-party apps. Bringing this capability directly into Maps would, in theory, allow users to initiate and complete food orders without switching to delivery or restaurant apps, although the underlying integration model is not yet clear.
Key details remain unresolved. The code does not indicate which restaurants or delivery services would be supported, whether the system would connect directly to restaurant ordering flows or rely on intermediaries, or how payments would be handled. It is also unknown whether the feature will be limited to certain markets or devices, and there is no timeline for testing or public rollout. As with any functionality identified via APK teardown, there is a possibility the capability will be modified significantly or never ship.
