Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met senior Google leaders in New Delhi to discuss how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can be used to strengthen India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, exporters and local businesses. The meeting formed part of the government’s broader push to leverage technology for innovation-led growth across key sectors of the economy.
According to an official update, Goyal met a delegation led by Vidhya Srinivasan, Vice President for Ads & Commerce at Google, and Preeti Lobana, Vice President and Country Manager for Google India. The discussion focused on ways to accelerate AI adoption, expand digital skilling initiatives and improve access to technology solutions for smaller businesses that form the backbone of India’s industrial and services ecosystem.
Goyal underlined that AI and digital tools can play a “transformative” role in empowering MSMEs, startups and exporters, particularly by helping them become more competitive and efficient in domestic and international markets. Both sides explored opportunities for deeper collaboration to support technology-driven growth, including targeted programs that could help enterprises use AI for productivity, market access and customer engagement.
The talks come amid a broader effort by the government to make MSMEs more resilient and globally integrated through technology adoption and skill development. Millions of small businesses remain critical to India’s economic output and employment, and policymakers have increasingly turned to partnerships with large technology firms to bridge gaps in digital infrastructure and capabilities.
Digital skilling was a key theme in the conversation, reflecting concerns that many smaller firms lack the training and tools needed to participate fully in the AI-driven economy. The engagement with Google is aimed at aligning corporate expertise in cloud, data and AI platforms with the government’s agenda to upskill entrepreneurs and workers, and to ensure that emerging technologies translate into practical benefits for MSMEs and local enterprises.
