Google Cloud plans to expand its AI data centre network in India as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services continues to rise. CEO Thomas Kurian said the company views India as a key market for its long-term AI growth and intends to build on its existing investments in the country.
Google Cloud is set to strengthen its AI infrastructure in India as businesses across the country continue to increase their use of AI and cloud technologies. During his recent visit to India, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company’s planned AI data centre in Visakhapatnam marks the beginning of a broader, long-term investment strategy for the country.
The company had earlier announced plans to invest $15 billion over five years to build a 1GW AI data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Kurian said this investment is only the first step, adding that Google Cloud plans to expand its AI infrastructure further as enterprise demand continues to grow.
Kurian said India has emerged as one of Google Cloud’s fastest-growing enterprise markets in Asia. According to him, companies across industries such as banking, healthcare, retail, and digital services are increasingly turning to AI to improve operations, strengthen security, and enhance customer experiences.
Several major Indian organisations, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Group, Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, Pocket FM, and CRED, already use Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise platform. They rely on the technology for applications such as healthcare data processing and financial fraud detection. Kurian said the growing adoption of AI by large enterprises is also encouraging smaller businesses to explore similar technologies, helping drive wider cloud adoption across the country.
Besides expanding its data centre network, Google Cloud is also working to host its Gemini AI models within India. Local hosting is expected to improve performance, reduce latency, and help businesses comply with data residency and regulatory requirements while supporting India’s growing focus on digital sovereignty.
Google Cloud’s expansion comes at a time when global technology companies are increasing their investments in India’s AI ecosystem. As demand for generative AI and cloud services continues to grow, the company aims to strengthen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets by expanding its AI-ready infrastructure in the years ahead.
