Nvidia Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. are broadening their decade-long artificial intelligence partnership beyond autonomous driving to cover smart cities, factory automation and urban traffic systems, deepening ties between the US chipmaker and Japan’s largest automaker. The latest agreement will see Nvidia supply AI hardware and software to power Toyota’s carmaking factories and mobility infrastructure, building on a relationship that began with using Nvidia’s platforms for automated vehicle development.
Under the expanded deal, Toyota plans to use Nvidia’s Omniverse platform to create digital twins of vehicle assembly lines, allowing engineers to model production changes virtually before they are implemented on the factory floor. The company will also deploy Nvidia’s Isaac robotics platform and Nemotron large language models to support industrial robotics and accelerate automotive software development, part of a broader push to bring so-called physical AI into manufacturing operations.
Toyota’s smart city subsidiary Woven by Toyota is incorporating Nvidia technology into the Woven City project, an experimental prototype community in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture designed as a testbed for emerging mobility and infrastructure systems. Woven by Toyota is developing the Woven City AI Vision Engine, a multimodal vision-language foundation model intended to interpret real-world urban conditions and anticipate events across traffic and city infrastructure, using Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs and Megatron-Core.
The partnership expansion comes as Nvidia steps up its broader engagement in Japan. During a visit to the country, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang outlined plans with local industrial partners, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, to support next-generation AI data center buildout, cooling and power systems. Nvidia executives have highlighted Japan’s manufacturing base and developer ecosystem as positioning the country to play a significant role in deploying AI into physical environments such as vehicles, factories and cities.
