The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is in discussions with Meta Platforms and Google to integrate spam complaints reported on platforms such as WhatsApp and Google’s phone dialer with telecom operators’ systems, according to reports. The move is aimed at tightening efforts against unsolicited calls and messages.
The proposed framework would connect user-reported spam data from digital platforms with the telecom industry’s Distributed Ledger Technology platform and TRAI’s Do Not Disturb portal. The idea is to give regulators and operators a more complete view of repeat offenders and improve enforcement against spam activity.
The proposal remains under consultation, and no final implementation timeline has been announced. Reports say TRAI is continuing discussions with both companies before any formal framework is finalised.
The initiative reflects TRAI’s broader attempt to bridge internet-based communication platforms and traditional telecom networks in India’s fight against spam and digital fraud.
