India’s tech job market is facing renewed pressure as a surge of more than 56,000 professionals from major global firms seek roles while active openings fell to 93,000 in June a 28‑month low, according to staffing firm Xpheno. Xpheno’s Active Tech Jobs Outlook reported a 14 percent month‑on‑month decline in active technology job openings for June 2026, marking the steepest monthly drop in the past year.
The inflow of candidates follows a global wave of technology layoffs, with Layoff.fyi recording 116,739 tech job cuts in the first five months of 2026; March was the worst month with more than 46,000 announced cuts and May saw nearly 28,900 roles removed. Staffing analysts say the combination of returning H‑1B visa holders, mass global downsizing and slower domestic hiring has intensified competition for fewer vacancies across experience levels.
Entry‑level opportunities were particularly affected, with openings collapsing 44 percent year‑on‑year, while mid‑to‑senior roles made up almost half of active postings in June, according to Xpheno’s report. Sectoral shifts are also evident: demand from traditional IT services has weakened more sharply than from Global Capability Centers, and non‑tech industries such as banking, manufacturing and healthcare are increasingly accounting for the remaining tech role demand.
The data underscore a structural adjustment in hiring priorities as companies increasingly emphasize AI‑driven productivity and tighter hiring budgets, leading to more cautious recruitment plans despite continued demand in select segments. With both candidate supply and global layoffs remaining elevated, India’s recruitment landscape is likely to remain competitive in the near term unless hiring demand recovers.
