Google’s overhaul of its Workspace app icons has sparked a viral meme craze online, with users flooding social media platforms with humorous reinterpretations of the new gradient-based designs. The trend gained significant momentum after CEO Sundar Pichai personally engaged with fan-made content on X, quote-tweeting a collage that reimagined app icons as clothing items.
The company officially announced the visual identity update for 14 Workspace products on May 25, 2026, confirming that Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, Chat, Slides, Vids, Keep, Forms, Voice, Sites, and Tasks would receive new icons featuring softer, rounder shapes with modern gradient effects. The rollout began May 19 and may extend beyond 15 days for some enterprise domains, with the changes replacing the flat, multicolored aesthetic that defined Google’s apps for approximately five years.
According to Google’s Workspace blog, the redesign aims to drive consistency and cohesion across the product suite while giving each app a more distinct identity. The new design incorporates gradient colors similar to those seen in Google Search, Maps, and Photos, moving away from the earlier approach that used all four company colors in most icons.
The meme response has been swift and creative. Users on X have submitted parody versions of the icons, with one particularly popular design cleverly using a pair of shorts to represent YouTube Shorts. The topic appeared on X’s trending page under “Sundar Pichai Joins Google App Icon Pun Trend” after the CEO’s engagement.
however, the redesign has not received universal praise. Some users on Reddit expressed concern that the new gradient-heavy icons make apps harder to distinguish at a glance, with one thread titled “Google new icons will be shock for many people” drawing considerable engagement. Others characterized the update as a superficial rebrand aligned with Google’s AI ambitions rather than a functional improvement.
The gradient icons are now rolling out across iOS, Android, and web platforms. As of May 27, all updated icons were available on iOS, while Android users have been seeing updates for Docs, Sheets, and Slides since May 22. The redesign reflects the growing use of AI features across Google’s products and aligns closely with the company’s broader AI-focused design language.
As the icons continue rolling out globally through June, the internet appears content to keep riffing on Google’s new look, with the CEO’s endorsement lending additional momentum to the trend.
