Swiggy has started testing LPG cylinder deliveries through its quick-commerce platform, Instamart, in partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL). The pilot programme has been launched in Bengaluru, allowing customers to order smaller LPG cylinders through the app.
Swiggy Instamart is expanding its services beyond everyday essentials with a new LPG delivery option. Under the partnership with HPCL, customers in Bengaluru can purchase 5-kg and 10-kg LPG cylinders directly through the Instamart platform.
The service is currently being tested as a pilot project, which will help both companies understand customer demand before expanding it to other locations. No timeline has been announced for a wider rollout.
Customers will be able to buy cylinders through the platform without having an existing HP Gas connection. However, first-time buyers will need to complete an identity verification process before receiving their order. The service will initially offer 5-kg metal cylinders and 10-kg composite cylinders, while the standard 14.2-kg household LPG cylinders will not be available under this programme.
For the first purchase, customers will receive a new cylinder. Future purchases will involve exchanging the empty cylinder for a refill. HPCL’s authorised distributor network will manage the delivery process, while trained personnel will handle last-mile deliveries in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements.
Amit Garg, Director of Marketing at HPCL, said the company remains focused on developing new solutions to meet changing customer needs. He added that the partnership with Instamart will help HPCL connect with customers through a faster, more convenient, and technology-enabled platform, while improving access to HP Navya Composite LPG Cylinders.
For Swiggy, the move is part of its strategy to expand Instamart into new categories. The platform already offers groceries, fresh produce, snacks, gadgets, and household products, as quick-commerce companies continue to diversify beyond traditional food and grocery deliveries.
The Bengaluru pilot will allow Swiggy and HPCL to evaluate customer response before deciding on further expansion. India is the world’s second-largest LPG market, with HPCL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) being the three major state-owned companies that primarily supply cooking fuel in the country.
