A new suite of AI automation tools from Anthropic has triggered what analysts are calling a “SaaSpocalypse” a dramatic global selloff that wiped out approximately $285 billion from software, legal technology, and IT services stocks in a single trading session on Tuesday, February 3.
The downturn began after Anthropic unveiled a legal automation plugin within its Claude Cowork platform, capable of performing contract reviews, compliance checks, and legal brief generation. The move raised concerns about the future relevance of traditional software models, triggering a wave of “get me out” trading across global desks, according to market participants.
“We call it the ‘SaaSpocalypse,’ an apocalypse for software-as-a-service stocks,” Jeffrey Favuzza, who works on the equity trading desk at Jefferies, told Bloomberg. “Trading is very much ‘get me out’ style selling.”
In the United States, Goldman Sachs’s basket of software stocks fell 6%, the steepest single-day drop since April. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 1.4%, erasing about $300 billion in market capitalization. Legal and data-focused firms were hit the hardest, with Thomson Reuters plunging 21%, London Stock Exchange Group down 13%, LegalZoom off 19%, and CS Disco dropping 12%.
Analysts at Piper Sandler downgraded several major software providers, including Adobe, Freshworks, and Vertex, warning that AI-driven automation could limit growth multiples across the sector.
The shock extended to Indian markets on Wednesday, where the Nifty IT index fell nearly 7%, wiping out Rs 1.75 lakh crore in value. Shares of Infosys and LTIMindtree fell over 8%, while TCS, Persistent Systems, and HCL Technologies also suffered steep declines.
Investors are increasingly viewing AI as a deflationary force, with Anthropic’s open-source plugins spanning legal, finance, marketing, and support applications seen as capable of automating many outsourced workflows. The episode marks a broader shift in sentiment, as markets begin reassessing AI’s role from enabler to potential disruptor within the global software industry.
