India and Spain are exploring a possible partnership to connect India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Spain’s digital payments platform Bizum. The proposed integration could make digital payments easier for Indian travellers in Spain in the future, but the project is still under discussion and no launch timeline has been announced.
India is working to expand the global reach of UPI, with Spain becoming the latest country to explore a possible connection with India’s digital payment system.
During Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent visit to Europe, India and Spain agreed to advance technical discussions on enabling interoperability between UPI and Bizum. The discussions focus on exploring how both payment systems can work together to support smoother cross-border transactions.
If implemented, the integration could allow users of UPI-enabled apps to make digital payments at supported merchants in Spain. However, the technical framework, implementation process, and timeline are yet to be finalised.
The move is part of India’s broader effort to expand its digital payment infrastructure globally. UPI services are already available in several international markets, including France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Qatar.
India has also been working with other countries on fintech cooperation and digital payment connectivity to increase the global adoption of UPI.
Spain’s Bizum is a widely used digital payment platform that enables instant payments through participating banks. A connection between UPI and Bizum could improve payment convenience for users travelling between India and Spain.
However, the availability of UPI payments in Spain will depend on the completion of technical integration, partnerships with financial institutions, and merchant acceptance.
Currently, Indian travellers visiting Spain will need to continue using existing payment methods until the UPI-Bizum integration becomes operational.
