India’s government has approved the RBI’s proposal to introduce one billion Rs 10 and Rs 20 polymer banknotes for field trials, marking a fresh test of plastic currency. Minister Pankaj Chaudhary clarified polymer notes will circulate alongside paper currency, not replace it. The move targets durability and anti‑counterfeiting, as lower denominations wear out quickly. India first tested polymer notes in 2012, but rollout stalled.
