Google rolled out a dedicated AI Mode button in its Chrome browser for iOS and Android devices on November 5, providing users with instant access to its Gemini-powered AI search capabilities. The new button appears prominently below the search bar on Chrome’s new tab page, positioned next to the Incognito mode option.
The update marks Google’s most aggressive push yet to keep users within its ecosystem as competition intensifies from AI-powered alternatives like ChatGPT and Perplexity AI. The AI Mode button launched initially for U.S. users, with Google planning to expand the feature to 160 additional countries supporting multiple languages including Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.
Google’s AI Mode leverages its Gemini 2.5 model to handle complex, multi-part questions and follow-up queries in a conversational format. The feature goes beyond traditional search by offering what Google calls “agentic capabilities” – AI that can perform real-world tasks like booking event tickets, restaurant reservations, and beauty appointments.
