Getty Images and OpenAI have struck a multi-year deal that will bring Getty’s licensed visual content into ChatGPT’s search and discovery features, according to reports and the companies’ announcement. The agreement is focused on display of licensed content, not AI model training.
The move fits a broader pattern in which AI companies are signing licensing agreements with media and content owners to support search, discovery, and attribution while reducing legal and trust concerns. Getty has already taken a similar path with Perplexity, which signed a multi-year image licensing agreement with Getty in October 2025.
For Getty, the partnership underscores a shift from confrontation to monetized distribution. Reuters reported that the company has also faced legal battles over AI image use, including its dispute with Stability AI, while Getty says it is working to make licensed imagery easier to use across AI products.
The OpenAI deal also reflects how visual content is becoming part of the competitive pitch among AI platforms. Getty’s shares rose sharply after the announcement, with market coverage saying investors viewed the agreement as a sign that the company’s archives could gain new value in AI-powered products.
